Aston Villa are still waiting to learn if they can register Brian Madjo for the new season after the 17-year-old struck twice in a 5-0 friendly win at Walsall on Tuesday. Without a successful appeal, he cannot play competitively until his next birthday in January 2027.
What happened in the Walsall friendly?
Madjo, who joined from Metz in January for £10 million, made his first public outing for Villa on Tuesday. He opened the scoring in the 24th minute, meeting Kosta Nedeljkovic’s cross to beat goalkeeper Jed Ward. Just before half-time, Madjo reacted quickest after Emi Buendia’s shot deflected into his path to double the lead. Luka Lynch and Aidan Borland added second-half goals as Villa eased to victory. The result leaves Emery’s side unbeaten in their last five games.
Aston Villa sit fourth in the Premier League with 65 points from 38 games and a +7 goal difference, 20 points behind leaders Arsenal. Their recent form reads WWDLL, though they beat Manchester City 2-1 on May 24.
Why FIFA blocked Madjo’s registration
FIFA blocked Madjo’s registration under rules on international transfers for under-18s. Villa argue he should qualify for exemption as he was born in London and has represented England at youth level. He has also earned three senior caps for Luxembourg. The club has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport after a hearing this month.
What comes next for Madjo and Villa?
Unless CAS rules in his favor, Madjo cannot play in competitive matches until January 2027. Emery is leaning on youngsters while seniors complete World Cup breaks, with John McGinn, Victor Lindelof and Evann Guessand expected back before the Far East tour. Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emil Martinez are unlikely to return until the week of the European Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on August 12. Villa’s next fixture is an away clash with Bayern München on August 7.
