Aston Villa is set for a challenging start to the Premier League season after selling two of its top players to direct rivals, according to former senior Villa scout, Bryan King. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, King expressed concerns over the club's decision and the potential impact on their upcoming campaign.
Several new faces have joined Villa Park this summer, including Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Alejandro Garnacho (on loan with an option to buy). However, the departure of key players Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans has left a significant void in Unai Emery's squad. Rogers made 55 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists, often serving as the difference-maker for Villa.
Tielemans, despite being sidelined much of the time due to injury, was still an essential player during his fit moments. His contributions were crucial in helping Aston Villa secure a successful Europa League campaign.
King's comments highlight the severity of the situation: 'I'll tell you what, the first month of the season is going to be very interesting. Especially for Villa,' he stated. 'I can't think of any other club who have gotten rid of two of their best players in the summer. Can you? And to let these players go to two rivals, that seems very strange to me.'
The loss of these players is particularly concerning as Aston Villa prepares for a tough early season schedule. They will face Brighton on the opening weekend and then host Premier League champions Arsenal. Other fixtures include Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Brentford, Newcastle United, and Manchester City in the first couple of months.
Without immediate replacements, Unai Emery may find himself in a difficult position as Villa adjusts to their new lineup.
