Aston Villa's Premier League clout could decide João Palhinha's future, with Benfica waiting to see if the English side makes a move for the Bayern Munich midfielder. Villa's reported interest has left Benfica struggling to compete, as the Portuguese club hopes for a last-minute collapse in negotiations.
Why Benfica is powerless in this transfer battle
Benfica's hopes of re-signing Palhinha hinge on Aston Villa failing to act. Journalist Paulo Catarro told CMTV’s Mercado Now that Villa’s Premier League status makes them a far more attractive destination. “Aston Villa aren’t just any club. We’re already talking about one of the top clubs in the Premier League,” he said. “And I think other factors start to carry weight in that situation.”
The risks for Palhinha if he waits
Catarro warned that Palhinha risks being left without a club if he holds out for Benfica. “That possible pact also carries a risk for João Palhinha. He could reach the end of the transfer window and Bayern could say: ‘Right, so you don’t want to go to this club? Then you stay here with your contract and don’t play,'” he explained.
What comes next for Aston Villa?
With the Premier League season just two weeks away, time is running out for Aston Villa to make a move. Catarro noted that English clubs typically act quickly before the season starts. “It also depends on what sort of offer Aston Villa might eventually want to make,” he said. “Because if they haven’t made one yet… English clubs normally do these things quickly and before the official season starts.”
Benfica’s last hope
Benfica’s only chance is if Aston Villa fails to make an offer. “Yes… But only if Aston Villa don’t come forward with a proper offer. And if Palhinha is going to turn them down, he also needs to have good reasons. Who turns down a potential offer from a club like Aston Villa?” Catarro said.
Aston Villa finished 4th in the Premier League last season with 65 points, securing a Champions League spot. Their recent form includes a 4-game winning run, with their last result a 2-1 victory over Manchester City.
